He said on X: 'Today is a very sad day. I just learned that my friend Clive Davis has passed away. Over the years, Clive always found the time to talk on the phone, answer an email, and stay in touch.
'Later in life, even though he never signed me, he wanted to—we just never found the right timing. At one point in the 1980s, we were even talking about forming a supergroup called The Spunky Merchants with myself, Eric Clapton, Sting, and Phil Collins.'
He noted that 'Clive loved the idea' but their schedules never aligned.
'Clive did so much for artists and for the music business as a whole. He was truly one of a kind and lived an incredibly full and remarkable life. If you knew him, you knew he genuinely cared about artists,' he recalled about his friend.

The message ended, 'He could be tough, but he was always fair. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans. He will be greatly missed. Love and Sunshine, Stephen.'

Davis is survived by four children – Fred, Lauren, Mitchell, and Doug – and eight grandchildren in addition to longtime partner Greg Schriefer.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, Davis' family said: 'To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives. He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.
'To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved.'
The family concluded the statement by adding that he was not only remembered for his career, but also as a beloved figure in his personal life.
'Through every chapter of his remarkable life, family remained Clive's greatest pride and deepest joy. Today, we celebrate not only a towering figure whose influence changed music forever, but the man who led our family with grace, generosity, and kindness.'
