Kristin Scott Thomas on Love in Her 60s

Kristin has given a rare insight into her marriage as she revealed how finding love has made her 'more joyous' than she was ten or twenty years ago. 

The actress, 66, married Bloomberg News' editor-in-chief John Micklethwait, 63, two years ago and the pair have co-written the screenplay, My Mother's Wedding, inspired by her own life story. 

Appearing on Elizabeth Day's How To Fail podcast, Kristin spoke about John when she was asked if she feels 'more joyous now than you did 10/ 20 years ago?'

Kristin replied: 'I do. And I think it's because, well, I found love, which is a very lovely thing to happen.' 

She continued: 'I've also managed to kind of complete things in my career. And when I say that, I mean, I've played, I've sort of done tragedy now. I feel I've sort of done it and I've emptied the bag. There's no more left.

'I think I did that when I did Elektra. I think that's what I thought, oh, I don't have to do that ever again. I don't have to weep for a dead father ever again. And so that was quite healing, I would say, playing that.'

The screen star is extremely private when it comes to talking about her relationship, but went on to talk about what it was like to work together on her directorial debut. 

The actress stars in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, Freida Pinto and Thibault de Montalembert. 

The plot follows three sisters who return to their family home to attend the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother, each dealing with their own personal problems. 

Of working together, Kristin said: 'It was great, it was really fun. We complement each other. 

'He manages to hold a lot of things in place at the same time whereas I'm totally scatterbrained and I find that quite difficult. I'm much better at dialogue than he is, I could hear the voices but he could build the structure.' 

The couple secretly married in 2024, after five years together. 

A friend told The Independent at the time: 'They are a perfect match. Both smart, wry and curious as well as devoted to each other.

'Everyone is delighted that they have got married after a wonderful five-year romance.'

Kristin has three children; Hannah, Joseph and George with her ex-husband François Olivennes, whom she divorced in 2005 after 17 years of marriage. 

My Mother's Wedding is inspired by Kristin's own childhood trauma of losing both her father and her stepfather, who were both pilots, in separate military jet crashes.

The actress also said the loss of her mother, Deborah, who passed away after a battle with cancer, 'hit her like a tank'.  

She said:  'My father died when I was nearly five and a half. And then when I was 11, and I just started a new school, it happens again. And that was much more than anybody could really handle, I think, by themselves.' 

'Grieving for my mother was just like being run over by a tank. I just could not, because now I was, I'd got over all those things and I'd accepted the fact that one is able to grieve and all this. And so that was a massive shock.'
